Darcy waits outside Judy's house. It’s 5:30 p.m., a half hour past closing time at Fernwick and Barnes. The clouds are thick enough for the streetlights to flicker on. As she sits behind the wheel of the rental car, a vehicle speeds around the corner and stops in the driveway. Judy steps out of the car and looks around cautiously before heading inside.

She’s instantly struck by the sight of the woman. Judy looks like she could be Constance’s younger sister. Or Darcy’s.

The junior firm member glimpses Darcy and hurries toward the steps.

“It’s okay. Constance Monet gave me your name.”

Judy relaxes slightly as she recognizes Darcy’s face. “What are you doing here? It's late.”

“I want to talk to you about the harassment at the office.”

“You’re one of the police officers who visited the firm yesterday. I don’t want trouble.”

Darcy takes a step closer, her eyes flickering over the house. “I think I know who is behind these threats you're receiving.”

Judy tenses again, her eyes narrowing as she steps back into the safety of her doorway. "Stan and Osmond? Do you know them?"

“No, but I’m aware of the phone calls. Constance tells me you’re receiving them too.”

Judy's face pales as she runs her fingers through her hair.

“I've been receiving strange phone calls for about a week.”

Darcy’s gaze shifts to the second-floor windows. “You should take self-defense classes. You and Constance both.”

Judy eyes Darcy warily. “I don’t know; isn’t that an overreaction? Osmond threatened to ruin my career, but he’s a child. He wouldn’t attack me.”

“He was happy to sleep with your friend against her will. The classes are a great way to protect yourself and gain confidence.”

Judy softens to the idea but isn’t convinced. “I’ll think it over.”

“I hope you do. Self-defense classes helped me survive a traumatic period in my life. Let’s talk about these phone calls. Tell me about them.”

“I don’t know how to explain the calls. They’re just weird. The caller says nothing but nonsense, but the sexual innuendo is clear.

“We need to report the calls,” Darcy says gently. “Are they arriving on your cell?”

“And on my office phone.”

“He calls you there too?” If the two firm members are behind the pranks, they’re taking a tremendous risk by placing the calls from inside the office. “What does he say?”

“I really don’t want to go into it. He’s looking for sex, but it’s so juvenile. I don’t know if he’s trying to scare me or just being an idiot. It’s like he watches too many horror movies.”

“I’ll need your cell number.”

“Can you trace the calls?” Judy asks.

“I can try.”

She’d already given the phone Parham found to Chief Davila. Now she wants to see that phone again. Did the creep call Judy from the same burner?

“Judy,” Darcy says, “have you ever met Jason McCaffrey?”

Judy’s mouth falls open. “The guy the police arrested?”

“That’s right.”

“No, I’ve never met him, thank goodness. He hit on Constance once. Did she tell you?”

“Yes.”

“Something weird occurred regarding McCaffrey.”

Darcy narrows her eyes. “Tell me everything.”

“A few nights ago, I awoke in the middle of the night and found a potted plant smashed on the porch.
